Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Glenda Farrell star in this 1930s crime drama directed by Mervyn LeRoy, based on the novel by W.R. Burnett. The film follows Caesar 'Rico' Badello (Robinson) as he rises through the ranks of Chicago's criminal underworld after moving there with his friend Joe Massara (Fairbanks Jr). However, as Rico descends deeper into a life of crime, ultimately seizing control of Sam Vettori (Stanley Fields)'s gang, Joe tries to start his own life as a dancer with his partner Olga (Farrell) and their differing ambitions threaten to break the fraternal bonds that have grown between them and destroy the lives they have created.
